Thoreau in the Mountains
Published in Hardcover by Farrar Straus & Giroux (December, 1983)
Authors: Henry David Thoreau and William L. Howarth
Average review score:

A great book for those who love the beauty of the hills!!
This book gives you a spectacular, vivid, and unique look at the mountains of New England as only Thoreau could provide. This book is a compilation of peak-by-peak short stories which include Thoreaus' own journal writings along with commentary by the author. You join Thoreau as he explores many of New England's more famous mountains. Originally published in the 19th Century, Thoreau gives a glimpse of the mountains before roads, well-graded paths, or even maps gave the average tourist easy access to their beautiful heights. Thoreau explores such peaks as Katahdin in Maine, Lafayette, Monadnock, and Washington in New Hampshire, as well as Greylock and Wachusett in his home state of Massachusetts. The author gives modern day reference points as you follow Thoreau on his adventures across New England. Thoreau even teaches, unintentionaly, some important do's and don'ts for the modern day explorer. As you will discover Thoreau even learned a few lessons that can still be seen to this day! Overall, a very interesting read, especially for anyone at home in the mountains of New England. A book sure to bring out the adventurer in you.

Time Out Boston (Time Out Guides)
Published in Paperback by Penguin USA (Paper) (July, 2001)
Author: Penguin Books
Average review score:

If only every city had a guidebook this good
Compact, informative, and useful, with a good balance between tourist info and the kind of thing you'd want to know if you were moving to Boston. The Times reviewer who called it "hip and culturally savvy" may have been revealing his own squareness -- I wouldn't say there's much truly countercultural about this book -- but it does cover everything from used record stores to gay bars, so it's not entirely stodgy, either. The maps are great and the book is small enough to keep at hand while exploring. A good choice.

The Toilets of New York: A Handy Guide to the Best and Worst Public and Semipublic Relief Stations for Those With a Need-To-Know
Published in Paperback by Litterati Books (June, 1990)
Author: Ken Eichenbaum
Average review score:

Missing your Mark
This book is an excellent guide for men. Not so much for tinkle-let's face it, we can pee anywhere. But when your AZT has got you going #2 every 5 minutes, you need a clean, quite place to go. Not one of those filthy bathrooms where the bowl is some jive-talking "holy roller" all down on your lifestyle.
My only gripe with the guide is that it does not point out the bathrooms that have fully functional Glory holes. Maybe in the next edition?

Town Of Tonawanda, NY
Published in Paperback by Arcadia Tempus Publishing Group, Inc. (01 March, 1997)
Author: John W. Percy
Average review score:

Book Review
The book contains old photographs of the history of the Town of Tonawanda, and the beginnings of the city of Tonawanda. The photos are clear and very insightful about the area. As a Tonawanda native and doing history studies, I find the book a valuable resource. Each photo has 2-3 lines describing the photo and the dates. A cool book.

The Traveler's Guide to Western New England and the Connecticut River Valley: Vermont, New Hampshire, Western Massachusetts, and Connecticut
Published in Paperback by Random House Trade Paperbacks (May, 1994)
Authors: Tim Mulligan and Stan Skardinski
Average review score:

Indisensable guide to the area
I use this guide frequently to plan short vacations around the Connecticut River Valley. It provides a good balance of description of the land and river; a well-chosen set of sights to see, including many that are off the beaten path; and reliable reviews of inns. The idea of centering a guidebook on a river valley appeals to me. A trustworthy source of information.

Trout Unlimited's Guide to Pennsylvania Limestone Streams
Published in Paperback by Stackpole Books (February, 2000)
Author: A. Joseph Armstrong
Average review score:

Informative
In this book, Joe listed any stream with a hint of limestone. He gave honest descrtipions, if there were no fish he said so. I just wish he had time to fish some of them more. An all around good book. I have tried some of the out of the way streams he mentioned.

Two Years in the Kingdom : The Adventures of an American Peace Corps Volunteer in Northeast Thailand
Published in Hardcover by Writers Club Press (November, 2002)
Author: Blaine L. Comeaux
Average review score:

A fellow PCV/PaKhamer...
I read this book before it was published and for sale on the internet...back when I was living in PaKham myself. I found this book really entertaining from the perspective that I was living in the same town, meeting the same people, and having some of the same experiences.
PaKham is one of the littlest known places in Thailand, but to me it will always be home. The book is very honest and humorous. It's a nice perspective on living in Thailand in a rural village in the poorest region of the country. There are good sections on the political history of the area (which is briefly mentioned in Lonely Planet...we had the monk that ordained a forest in order to save it from being harvested), information on ghosts and superstition (a big part of life in Essan and a favorite chapter of mine), plus Thai idioms and language (that are always useful when trying to impress your Thai friends).
I recommend this book to anyone thinking of living in Thailand, especially doing the volunteer life, and anyone thinking of travelling there as well (for more than 2 days that is). Or if you're just interested in travel writing.

The Used Book Lover's Guide to the Mid-Atlantic States: New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania & Delaware (Used Book Lovers' Guide Series)
Published in Paperback by Book Hunter Pr (October, 1997)
Authors: David S. Siegel and Susan Siegel

Great guide for where to shop
I bought the 1993 edition while I was living in Central NY and can only comment on the Central NY listings. I found the format easy to skim through and the maps/directions extremely helpful. All the information you might want is included--phone numbers, hours of operation, genres sold, etc. Occasionally the description of a store's offerings was not quite right, or the place in question no longer existed, but such changes can happen when there are several years between editions. I intend to buy the edition for NC once I get moved in.

Walking the Shores of Cape Cod
Published in Paperback by On Cape Publications (01 March, 1997)
Author: Elliott Carr
Average review score:

Pleasures in reading
One of the pleasures I savor in reading a good book is to think about friends who might also enjoy the book. So it is with Walking the Shores of Cape Cod, by Elliott Carr, a gift I received from Lindy and John last Christmas. Having tramped a bit of the outer beach myself when we camped as a family many years ago, I can relate to many of his stories. And of course, we have the model set by Henry David Thoreau, almost 150 years ago.
I have recommended it to a number of friends who have a Cape Cod connection.
